Dr. V V Bashi

Dr V.V. Bashi is one of India's most accomplished and internationally respected cardiothoracic & vascular surgeons, with over 51 years of distinguished surgical experience and more than 20,000 successful cardiac operations.  He serves as the chairman of the Aortic Aneurysm Centre and director of the Institute for Cardiac & Aortic Disorders (ICAD) at SIMS Hospitals, Vadapalani, Chennai.

Dr Bashi is recognised as a pioneer of beating-heart coronary artery bypass surgery and arterial grafting in India and is among the nation's most experienced surgeons in complex aortic aneurysm surgery, having performed more than 2,000 aortic aneurysm procedures, including 500 + aortic root replacements, 250 aortic arch replacements, thoraco-abdominal aortic reconstructions and complex redo surgeries. He performed the first successful classical elephant trunk procedure in India (1993) and the first successful frozen elephant trunk procedure (2012) and has developed three innovative surgical techniques in aortic surgery. His expertise also encompasses coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair and replacement, adult congenital heart surgery, carotid artery surgery, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, hybrid cardiovascular procedures and advanced thoracic vascular surgery.

Throughout his career, he has held several prestigious positions, including former Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore; Adjunct Professor at the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University; and the 51st President of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS). He also received advanced cardiothoracic training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia, further strengthening his expertise in coronary artery bypass surgery.

Being an internationally respected authority in cardiovascular surgery, Dr Bashi has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, presented over 250 research papers, and delivered invited lectures, live surgical demonstrations and workshops across the USA, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and other countries. His pioneering contributions have been recognised with numerous national and international honours, including multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree, and fellowships and memberships of leading global cardiovascular societies.
